It's been forever..

I don't even remember the last time I was logged in to post. I'll give a quick update on both work and life so that I can play catch up to the 1 person who reads this blog. The wife and I had our daughter almost three months ago! Baby Sofia :) We've been busy on the home front so I've had little time to update or even think about updating this blog. On the work front, I'll begin teaching for Animation Mentor in June!! I'm super pumped and can't wait to be a part of it. We've wrapped up on Rio and I've been animating on IA4 for a while now. I will be updating the Rio reel soon and will post it on here within the week or so. Other then that, busy with the family and busy at work. Nothing new :)

It's only been a billion years so hears an updated demo reel.
I was responsible for all of the hero animations. Most of the time, I completed the whole shot. Some shots had the background characters animated by another person. Including the first shot. I'll post a breakdown of the exact shots.

Ice Age on DVD

Go get it! It's another well made film from Blue Sky Studios. Hats off to all the departments for really putting this one together. So I'm going to finally post some of the works that I've done on both Open Season 2 and Ice age 3. Horton will come at some point. I'm always hesistant in putting up my work because they were created at different points in my career and also with different deadlines. OS2 had more then double the required quota that we had to do on Horton and Ice Age 3. Thus, the quality obviously has to suffer a bit. I'll update my site within the next few days with the new reels. On a site note, Rio is looking amazing. I think it's really going to surprise a lot of people and is the best Blue Sky film yet! Check back soon for the reels!

Yeah it's been ages. No one reads this blog anyway so I don't feel that guilty :) Things have een extremely busy on my end. We are heavy into preproduction on our next film Rio and I haven't had time to post anything here. Ice Age 3 has made over 760million and counting!! That's about all the news that I have. I'll be posting more regularily.... I swear!

So we are knee deep into crunch time and posting updates are becoming impossible right now. The movie is looking great and it seems to be going smoothly. Many things have happened since the last time I posted. The winners of the dude challenge have been announced. We met Ken Duncan, Brian Hensen, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich (Robot Chicken) The studio is about to move to CT and we are all excited to have a new space. So yesterday I received a letter from a young girl in england asking me to draw her a picture. In the letter she expresses her love of animation and the arts and how much she loved Horton and Open Season. The cool thing was that she did this to a lot of people from various companies. Attached in the letter were small pics from Pete Doctor, Matt Groening and various other artists from around the world. It's awesome to know that people really enjoy what we do. Getting people into our movies and having them love the characters, lets us know that we are doing "something" right. Ultimately inspiring a child by the work we are making is the best reward. Word!

Transformers the Game Credit...weird

So I was searching this game and happend to find this link on gamestop. It's really odd how I'm the only one from Reel FX that was credited for the cinematics. To set the record straight, I was only one of many animators (maybe 20-30) that worked on the cinematics. I don't want people to think that I did them myself. A lot of super talented folks worked on it and they deserve the credit too. WORD.

Richard Williams!

Richard Williams came to talk to us a few days ago. He was kind enough to take photos and talk to us about his life. It was truely inspiring and fun to meet the legend himself. He even signed my survival kit!! If you don't know, he's the dude in red at the bottom. Next to him is his wife and to the right of him is Carlos (one of the directors)

We have finally unpacked the last box of stuff in our apartment! We love the location and it's finally feeling like home. IA is going great. The movie is looking awesome and I think people are really going to enjoy it. We just got a batch of 9 temp animators to work on the movie with us. We went out drinking yesterday to get to know each other more and it was a blast. It was a great time and thankfully a buddy got me home in 1 piece. Ta ta for now.

So I set my last keyframe on OS2 yesterday! It was a crazy 25 sec shot! It was definitely really crazy to work on and I had to stick to a personal schedule to get in done on time. For most people who don't know, an average shot is around 3-5 sec! Do you know what this means? Party time!!

Well I'm on my last shot on OS2 and woooosh it's been a doozy. OS is looking great. It's not only looking good but it has a great story. I think people will be very surprised with this one. I'm trying to finish this shot and the wife and I are going to take a little vacation. We are going crazy planning a vacation, looking for a new apartment closer to work and trying to get someone into our apartment when we leave. Things are busy busy!

Acting Reference

So I've recently watched the movie Juno and I thought it was a really cool movie. Even though it didn't have any explosions or car chase, I found myself really into the film. Ellen Page does a great job in her performance and she has a lot of personality. Here is a small clip from the film that I thought was really cool for reference. The whole sequence where Juno tells her dad and step mom that she is pregnant is awesome.

What caught me about this shot was how important video reference is to animation. Let's say you get a shot like this to animate. You are asked to do a simple shot of Juno responding to her step mom about the baby fingernails.(Last shot where she says "yeah." Now their are two important things about this reaction. First you must know what this sequence is about. You can't just get a shot and animate it. You must watch the entire sequence to get the vibe from your character. You must understand what has happened in the sequence and not just your shot. Second, you must know your character. How would they act in this situation? In this clip, Juno says "yeah" but is shaking her head no. She's shaking her head no because she can't believe it either. (about the finger nails) This is where a layered thought process is going on. She's responding to her stepmom AND thinking I can't believe it either. Some animators might take the shot as it is and animate a head shaking yes to go with the yeah response. This could work but it's not giving enough information about what the character is thinking. This is why video reference is key to get that level of believability in your characters. So next time you get a shot, don't just jump on the computer to get it done faster. Try shooting reference and add those subtle details that make a shot sing.

So what's going on in Ray town? Nothing much actually. Still cranking on OS2, which is looking amazing. All the artists are doing an amazing job staying true to the look and style of the original. Just picked up Mass effect for the 360 which is another awesome game. Today, I also got GTAIV! It's a great game and definitely deserves the IGN review of a 10. It has a ton of great little details that adds to the realism of the game. Even something as small as the cloud of exhaust that comes out of the car. When you drive onto the side walk, the car compensates for the tire on the curb and off! It's really fun and highly recommended. Well, I'm off!

Blink detail

Another thing I've noticed more and more is that both our mouth and eye corners stick together duing open and close positions. It's almost like super small overlap. I've made this quick movie of a blink to show what I mean. Notice how the corners of the eyes lead the blink down and stick together on the way up. It's really subtle but can add that level of detail that can make it stand out. I've also added a tiny amount of squash to the eye to give a more fleshy feel to it. The key to good facial animation is the fleshy organic feel of the face. The jaw and eyes are a great place to S&S. The last bit of detail I've done is to contract the eyes ever so slightly when they open. This is to simulate light going into the eye when it opens. Our eyes not only dialate when we add or subtract light but they also dialate when we change focus. Hope this is helpful. Word

So this is a non animation related post about a company called SMKSuperStore. I recently purchased a ton of computer parts from them to make a new machine to work at home. I wanted to build a serious machine so that I don't have to buy another one for a few years. I've bought parts from them many times before and had a great experience. Not this time..... I bought a very expensive video card (with the rest of the computer parts) and guess what?? They apparently didn't have it in stock so they replaced it with a cheaper, lower end card and charged the same!! I call them back and they said, "let me talk to my supervisor and maybe we can buy it from an outside vendor and send it to you..." I'm like ok fine whatever. My wife calls back because they didn't call us and the women said their was nothing she could do. Nothing she could do? No apology, no discount on an even more expensive card? I almost send it all back but decided to keep everything but the video card. I needed it badly for a long 20sec shot I'm working on. Long shots like that require a powerful computer to handle all those keys. I was able to find an even better card then what I purchased for a bit cheaper from tigerdirect. Lesson here is, DONT BUY FROM SMKSUPERSTORE.COM They are sneaky people. They didn't call me to ask if it was ok to substitute the card that I wanted. They also charged me more for the crappier card they put in the case! Everything else was at a great price. The video cards were more expensive from SMK but I thought they were good people. For all the money I spent, they should've given me a video card for free. It's cool and now everything is fine but I wanted the very few people that read this or accidently read this NOT to buy from them. Word up.

Horton Breakdown list

It will be a little while before I get my shots so I decided to post a quick breakdown list. These are in order from the begining to the end. I'm doing this from memory so hopefully I get it all right :D I did everything in the shot unless noted.

***I realized after the post that a ton are out of order. Sorry :P

-I did the speck shot in the begining where the speck passes two rocks and reveals the whole jungle of nool.

-After Horton tells the kids to jump on his back, the yellow girl (Katie) does a weird noise. I did the shot after that which has the kids on his back and Horton reacts and says "ooooookay" and walks off screen right.

-Horton explains about the leaf bugs and Tommy and the kids watch horton in awe. I did the two shots with the kids watching Horton.

-As Horton tells the kangaroo mom no (about giving the clover to her) Monkeys come out of the forest. I did the monkeys

-The kangaroo mom has cornered Horton and in the previous shot says (something like, "you don't want to mess with me Horton.") My shot is the Kangaroo mom walking toward Horton and says "You don't" as Horton backs up into a tree.

-4 kids walk out to Horton. This is when he has the speck and they say. "Hey Horton whatcha got there.

-Vlad is Chasing Horton in the Bamboo. I did the side shot where he is flying and gets stopped.

-I did Vlad trapped in the Bamboo right after he gets stopped. He's blocked and yells "Horton!!"

-I did the shot of Horton walking toward mount nool as he says "I will create a world where every who....." and the camera pans up to the mountain

-I did the two shots in the snow sequence where the mayor says "Oh horton" then Dr Laru puts her glasses up and says "what?"

-I did one shot in the cloverfield sequence where Horton looks up from the ground and says "Anyone?"

-When the kangaroo mom gives the jungle a speech, the animals come out from the trees. I did 3 shots of the monkeys climbing, jumping and swinging down the trees. Then the monkeys jump on the backs of Yaks. I only did the main monkeys and not the background characters. In the Yak shot, I only did the main monkeys and Yaks.

-After Horton says "a persons a person, no matter how small." Rudy (kangaroo boy) says "Huh" and starts to realize the message. Then the kangaroo mom looks down and freaks out. Then she covers Rudys ears and then Horton reacts to what she did. I only did the main characters.

-The mayor is in the bedroom with his 96 kids and they all just asked for water. I did the last shot where he agrees to get them all water.

-After horton finds the clover and realizes that the mayor is ok he jumps around which shakes whoville. I did the shot of the mayor yelling at horton to stop. (I also did the buildings bouncing in the background) "horton, horton, stop, stop it!"

-Mayor wife shot where she is banging pans together toward the sky

-I did a lot of monkey stuff. I did a lot of the monkey walking and idle monkey cycles used all through the movie.

-The mayor and Jojo are on the bike bouncing and riding to get to the people of whoville. I did the first two bike shots of the mayor and jojo bouncing in and falling down the hill and riding along the road.

-The kangaroo mom says to bring out the beezlenut oil. I did next shot of the monkeys carring the pot of oil and a few other monkeys. It's 2 shots. The monkeys step aside and the big monkey walks in the middle of them carrying the pot and then the next overhead shot of the monkey carrying the pot as he walks screen right.

-I did the shot after rudy says "i hear them" and the jungle animals each turn their heads screen left to the kangaroo mom as she reacts. I did about 10 characters including the kangaroo mom and rudy.

-A couple shots were cut but might make it onto the dvd. I'm missing a ton of shots but thats a good amount of them.

Few things

First thing is Horton is out today. Go see it! As soon as I get my shots I will cut a new reel :D

The second thing is something that I feel is important in animation. Lead and follow. When animating a character in the pose to pose method it is sometimes hard to break up the different body parts. The common result is animation that looks like every pose is hitting at the same time. The solution is not to just offset keys a few frames. It might work sometimes but you have to know why you are doing it. The thing that I find helpful is the idea of lead and follow. To me, lead and follow is the idea that a body part will lead an action and then something else will follow it. For example: A character raising his hand. The arm will begin the action (shoulder lifts, upper arm, etc) and then the body. This is just an example and can be animated many different ways including having the body start the action. So for this example, the arm leads the body up. The way that I think of it sometimes is that the arm is an important part of the scene and I want the viewer to look at it right away. Thus, I will lead with the arm. It's not a science and I usually go for what looks the most appealing at the end. The reason this is helpful to me is because when I block out an action, I already know if a body part is going to lead a gesture or move. Knowing this will allow me to isolate movements in my blocking so that I don't go to spline and have poses hitting at the same time. Personally, I don't always have every single part of a character moving on the same pose. Sometimes only an arm or hand will move in stepped mode. This assures me that I won't have the problem with twinning or robotic poses. Hope this helps! Werd.

Anticipation

When I saw Balls of fury I thought this part was a great use of anticipation and then changing up the result. I was super lucky to find the clip on Youtube and thought that I would share it. Notice how Fogler gets upset in the begining of the clip and starts messing up the plant. From the tone of his voice and that action of slapping the plant, we get a sense that he is upset but in a comical way. He's slapping a plant for cying out loud! If it were more serious, he might have thrown something or would've been more violent to the plant or to Lopez. Notice how we have a nice build up of comedy from him slapping the plant, then the plant falls and he has to readjust it. (If he were really pissed he wouldn't think twice of fixing the plant. He obviously wouldn't slap the plant either) The next thing he does, I thought was great. He still tries to be pissed off and quickly opens the door wide and he anticipates a big slam closed. What does Fogler do? He does a big anticipation then does something we didn't expect. He slowly closes the door. This is a great comedic tool and a good way to throw the audience off. When the audience expects something to happen, it doesn't do much for the entertainment value. When the character does something unexpected, the audience is put into a different mind set. (This is probably what the brain is thinking when watching this clip. "ok, he's a silly man slapping the plant. Oh, now he's going to slam the door really loud. Whoa....what? Oh snap...I didn't expect that to happen.") Ok, maybe this is just what my brain was thinking when watching this clip. I just felt that we don't see that style of comedy in films today. Fun! Fun!! Now use this tool in your animation! Word.

New Character

So with a little free time that I had I went back to an old character and updated him. I added some more edge loops to his face so that I can have better brows and also actual lids instead of half spheres. I have a good amount of blenshapes on his brows, eyes and facial hair. Ok this dude is sick. I'm not a huge opera fan but I can really appreciate what he's done. You would never guess that would come out of his face. Watch him rock it. On the animation side of things, watch the women and see how you can really read how she feels at that moment. Roughly around 1:57 time. As soon as we cut to her she exhales and then takes in a breath slowly. You can see that she is really touched by his voice. She begins to blink a lot more then normal because she is starting to tear up. If you really analyze video reference it will give you some spice to add to your animations. I think I'm going to choose a video every week or so and break it down here on my blog. I think it will help my analytical skills when I animate a shot. I also think it will be fun to really tear apart an actors performance. Enjoy!

Control in animation

I must admit, I'm an Internet addict. Hi my name is Ray and I have a problem :) I look at a lot of demo reels. I do it because I like to see how other people approach animation. Whether you are new to the field or a seasoned pro, I've probably seen your reel or something from it. I've decided to write a short post on demo reels after browsing strutyourreel and checking out a few. Yes, I got my fix for today :)This pretty much goes along with Mike wallings post on weight and polish. First off, I think looking at other peoples work is an excellent way to learn about polish. Polish isn't something you are really taught because it's too subjective. If you really study other peoples work, you can look at it with two ways of thinking. Depending on your mood for the day you can really focus on A) the acting of the piece or B) the polish. Overall, the acting is what really matters but polish is definitely important. You can watch the piece and say "I really believe this character is sincere" and/or "the polish of this piece is very well done." When I refer to control in animation, I'm talking about the polish. I'm sure people have heard about an animation being too floaty/swimmy or too stiff. It's that balance that is hard to master. If the animation is too floaty, the character feels out of control and thus we don't believe his actions. Right away we say it's bad animation. It's bad because we don't believe he's alive. We know he's CG or 2d but we don't want to think about that when we are watching it. I think stiffness works depending on the style of animation. If you are animating for ex. the penguins from Madagascar, then stiff, cartoony animation works. If not, it just doesn't feel right. Again we don't believe he's alive. Controlling the character is very important. You want the audience to believe in the actions of the character/s. For me, the first thing I usually look at is the acting. If the acting works, I'll move onto the polish. I think the best tool we have is our eyes. Try to step back from your work (If you don't have someone to look at it) and pick it apart. If something bothers you and your not crazy about a pose or gesture, fix it. Don't leave it in thinking that the polish will make it work. If the acting isn't right, no amount of polish in the world will fix it. It's easier said then done. I'm just trying to give an idea to keep these things in mind when animating. Make sure the character is sincere and his movements are controlled. (Not swimmy or stiff) Frame by frame your work helps a ton!! As your eye gets more trained you will be able to watch it while it plays and pick out the parts that need cleanup. These are things I've picked up from other animators in the industry that will hopefully help you one day :) I'm outtie. Holla!

Happy Sad Day

So today is a happy day. It's the day of my birth!! yaya....okay enough about me for now. Today is also a very very sad day. My 360 gave me the rings of death. Yes folks.....the RED RINGS OF DEATH! At first the system locked up. It kept locking up every 2 minutes. I tried everything from taking out the cd to removing the hard drive. Unfortunately she just kept freezing.... I called XBOX and paid for a repair. They are sending me a box and will fix the thing. Good thing happened when I went to take the cd out to prepare it for shipping....I got the red rings. So people are wondering why I might be happy. If you see the red rings, microsoft will replace the xbox for free. This is a common problem and luckily they are smart to fix it. This means i will get my payment back! Whoohoo. Unfortunately I will have to wait a while to play :( Booooo but it's cool. So you see, it was both a Happy and a sad day. Things eventually went my way. Sweeeeet

An animators Brain

As animators, we are constantly thinking about work. We are thinking about eye blinks, and human behavior. We are thinking about the shot that you will be animating in a week. Our animation mind doesn't shut off. You need to have something to get away from work. You need some sort of outlet to stay sane :D Personally, I think hobbies are the best way to keep your mind fresh. I enjoy playing video games and brewing beer. I also like watching movies and carpentry. If I didn't have these things to get me away from animation, I don't know if I would be able to focus. I'm currently playing Guitar Hero III, The orange box and sometimes rockband on the Xbox 360. I'm also playing Zelda:Phantom hourglass on the DS. These things let me turn off the thinking cap and just enjoy life for a moment. This is not to say that animation is in any way bad. I love animation but as an animator you know that you need to take a break sometimes. Lesson of the day: Take a break. Your mind needs a rest too.

Small Update

Here's a small update on that clip I was working on. I still have to finish my first pass on the arms and the face stuff. Once I get this first pass on everything, then I will go back and clean up some arcs and junk.

Short silly shot I'm working on between work. I only have a few hours in on it so far. Hopefully I don't get swamped and leave this in blocking. I acted this one out and blocked in the main ideas. I broke it down and adjusted the timing. I did really quick and dirty lipsync and have to go in and fix it up but figured I post it anyways. It's roughly 3.3mb

SubBeats in animation

This is something that I think helps me with my scenes. In my particular work flow, I get a shot and begin planning away. I look at the story boards or kickoff notes and then start thinking about my acting choices. Once I understand what direction the shot should go (or think I understand :) I go shoot video reference. When I'm finished and happy with the reference I go to the computer and capture the best takes to a quicktime movie. When I analyze my reference, I'm looking for the little details that I unconsciously put in. You have your "golden story telling poses " locked down. You know what poses you need to sell your idea and you block those out. Then when you begin to refine, you can now add these sub beats into your shot. What I mean by sub beats are the small accents that don't overpower the main beats. This will add some texture to you scene and keep it from feeling too simple. (When I say say simple, I'm referring to animation where you just see main poses) In my opinion, the best animation is the one where you can't find the golden poses. They are so naturally weaved into the animation that make it difficult to pick out. You don't to overpower the shot with a ton of sub beats but enough to keep them alive and natural. This is where I steal them from my video reference. I look to see where I naturally accented the small beats and I add those in. It really helps the scene feel natural and unique. It's very hard to think about all of these things for me personally. This is where my video reference helps me add to the scene. Happy animating!!

clever aint eye? Okay.... enough crap. I was watching a movie the other day and decided to go into animation mode. I began studying the performance of Al Pacino and how he gestures and reacts to the other actors. I really began studying the eyes of the other actors. If you really watch closely, you will notice some awesome things that we naturally do. Here is a quick test I did using the eyes.

** I basically used Quicktime to convert the avi. Unfortunately it probably dropped frames but you can still get the idea. **

If you notice the lids follow the pupil. This is important and many times forgotten. Many people will just move the pupils but not lids when doing eye darts. Also notice the overshoot in the eyes on the first look. This is something I really noticed a ton. I thought this was kinda neat. When quickly looking to the side without blinking, I noticed an overshoot that happens with the top lids. Thought I would share this cool bit of eye info. Enjoy.

It's been a while so I figured I give an update. We are wrapping up on Horton and it's freaking cool. I was very lucky to work on this movie very early in production. I was able to see the project grow from only a few sequences complete to almost 100% animated. I've learned a ton about appeal and performance at BS. Soon I will wrap up on Horton and then I will be working on an awesome gig with Reel FX. Unfortunately I won't have a break between projects and will be rolling right into the next movie. I had a chance to watch a full screening with a lot Horton finished and I really enjoyed it. I'm not just saying it because I worked on it, I truley think it's a well paced movie with a lot of fun for all ages. That's all for now. Holla

Long time no post! Well Horton is looking amazing. Besides the animation looking fantastic, the lighting is really kicking it up a notch. Working at Bluesky has been a blast. The people really make it an awesome place to work. Every time you see a new shot, it just blows my mind. I've been fortunate enough to get some fun shots and I've been learning a ton about animation. The most important thing that I've learned is the importance of performance. Without a good performance you have nothing. I wanted to share something that really helps kick a scene up a notch. Most young animators tend to fall into the trap of just making a scene flat. You always want to spice up your scene with information for the audience. For example: You have a guy open a door, walk to a window and look out. What does this tell the audience about the character? Not much. Just having him walk in and do these actions doesn't give us too much information. Say you have him run in really fast, slam the door, put his back to the door and run to window. What does this tell us now? Well, we can assume he is running or hiding from someone or something. He's probably scared and worried that he is being followed. So you see the difference is that we are telling the audience a little something about his character. When you get a shot in production, you are given information about your scene and the scene goals. It's up to you to do your research and figure out how the character is feeling at that moment. How he has been acting through out that sequence and his already defined personality. With that information you can get ideas on how to act out the shot and how to show it in that shot. Here is another example that I got from my father. (Who is definitely not an animator) My father works for the city and has dealt with working on subway tracks before. He was telling me a story on how you can tell the new workers from the old timers. When working on the tracks, sometimes you need to step over the third rail to get around. (The third rail is the one with the electric juice that runs the train and can kill you.) He told me that the old timers would comfortably step on top of the rail or walk right over it with no problem. He then told me that the new guys would very slowly and carefully spread there legs wide and step over making sure not to even get close to the rail. Now he can tell who is new and who has been doing it for a while. In animation, these distinct ways of handeling that situation gives the audience the same type of information that it gave my father. It lets us know a little bit more about the character that we didn't know before. With that being said, if you have a shot that calls for a certain goal to happen, spice it up with information. The scene will be boring and/or fall flat. On the flip side, you don't want to give everything about the character in one scene. It's a balance of giving the right amount of information for that specific scene about the character. Remember that when you act it out, think to yourself: Is it the most entertaining way to show the character? Is it telling the audience anything? Do I need to spice up his performance so that the audience can better understand what has or is about to happen? Hopefully this little bit of info will help you with your shots. So now go kick those scenes up a couple notches!!

Updated the animation section! I had a lot of fun working on the transformers game with the crew at Reel FX. Although the deadlines were short, we still managed to finish more then 16 minutes of animation in a really short time. The donkey walk cycle was a test created to see how the lighters could match the look of donkey. They did an awesome job with it! Take a look at Ray Chases site for the renders of Puss and donkey. Unfortunately, I didn't have original files to post so the transformers clips and the donkey clips are both extremely compressed. Double compressed that is....so it definitely doesn't play correctly. Remember every frame counts! not in this case sadly :( On a site note, check out these new posters that have been spotted!! The movie is looking really awesome. The talent on this film is amazing and inspiring. Look out for it in 2008!

Breaking in

I decided to write this post because someone at work was asked how to get into the industry by his students. I figured that if anyone pops over to this blog, I can give them a little advice. So you want to be a professional animator? You want people to pay you to do what you love? The main advice that I can give is to find an internship. There are too many student animators that have little or no experience but want to go straight to Pixar. Sometimes you have the rare ocassion where a talented animator gets picked up right away. (Remember I said rare) Everyone starts from the bottom and works his/her way up. It's hard but it's part of the business. Sometimes it takes years before you finally get to where you want to be but in the end it's all worth the journey. I personally did an internship, I've also worked using motion capture for a while (Which I really don't like) I've done commercials, games etc. Some people work in games, TV or commercials but ultimately strive to go to film. It will happen as long as you work hard at what you love and don't forget about that journey. Believe me, I was that college student who sent my reel to those big feature studios expecting to land my first gig as an animator. It's an extremely difficult road to get to your dream job. If it were easy, it wouldn't be a dream job would it? You will face countless rejection letters or emails. It's just part of the industry. The idea is to keeping chugging to that goal and never giving up no matter how many bumps are in the road. Remember, start from the bottom and build your way up. If you don't land that dream job right away, keep working at it until you do. Sometimes you have to take any job to pay the bills but just don't forget about that goal. The competition out there is HUGE, you need to get yourself noticed and sometimes it can be experience that gets you that job over the next fella. Hope this helps. Happy Animating!!

Just saw Meet the Robinsons, Disneys latest animated film. I have to be extremely honest, I loved it. I was extremely entertained and really saw the great personalities in each character. It's a great story and great animation. The animation on the villian is amazing. They really have made him feel tangible with the deformations of his face. Great stuff!

Yep so my motherboard has passed on to the other side. I speak to you via the wifes computer. Luckily i looked at a receipt from a while back and realized that I purchased a 3 year warrenty at that time!!! Good going Ray! I love the warrenty :) So in about a week or two I should be fully back online. In other news, I just got my new HDTV! I love that bad boy. It plays HD like no other. Playing the xbox is just awesome :D I will also be gone for the end of this month. Me and the wife plan to take a short vacation together out of NY. That's all for now.

Yes in fact it is another shot. I think this time around I'm going to post every single step of my workflow. Here is the really rough blocking of my shot. I will later upload the video reference that I shot on my webcam. Then I will continue adding my poses and the my breakdowns and so on. I found this clip and thought it was really funny. I never saw the movie so I don't have an idea of this character before hand. When I heard it, I knew right away what I wanted to do. I tried a few ideas out and came up with this. There are still many poses that I didn't put in but I figured I will post it anyway. I felt like this guy is pitching this idea to someone. As stupid as it sounds, he thinks it's pretty cool. I'm also going to show as he explains it that he has a little doubt about the idea, almost like he is figuring it out as he is telling it. More to come :D Heres the link!

So I have the nintendo wii and it's really awesome. The problem is that a lot of games are exclusive for those systems. I really wanted gears of war and had to do something drastic. I was given the 360 as a present from my fantastic parents! It's AWESOME.

So I've been in Texas for the last week working at ReelFX in house. It's an awesome work environment with great people. It's definately one of the top places that I've had the great chance to work. The work that comes in and out of this studio is fantastic. There are a great bunch of talent here from lighters, modelers and especially animators. I've learned so much and greatful for the experience. I will be coming back to NY on the 31st of this month. This means I will be spending my birthday in TX! I'm having a blast here and really enjoy coming to work. Well I'm off!! Until next time America

Short short

So I've began moving foward on a quick short. A short short :) I can't say much now but here is a first rough of the main character Bob. He's not going to have a mouth so I'm having to rely on getting most of the emotions through his eyes, brows and his mustache. I will be using his mustache as a sort of mouth and it will deform to help sell his emotions.

Boy this is a bummer. I wrote this whole article on entertainment and then IE crashed on me! Well let me try this again :)

What is entertainment? It is described by the dictionary as something affording pleasure, diversion, or amusement. As animators, it is our jobs to make sure every shot we do is entertaining. Animation is more then making pretty moving drawings or nicely executed animations. It is about entertaining the audience! Without entertainment, you just have another boring shot for your reel. What's the point in that? Many young animators tend to forget about the overall idea about animation. They tend to think more about the way something moves vs. why something moves. Trust me, I was there before! Well Mr. Smarty pants how can I make something entertaining? Well, it's a difficult task. What may seem entertaining to you might not be entertaining to someone else. The goal is to cater to as many people as you can. Here are a couple ideas that might help. First off, try to avoid cliché ideas/poses. Try to solve your scene as uniquely as possible. Act it out and remember to stay true to your character. Try as many different solutions to a scene and choose the best idea. Secondly, show your idea to someone. It's hard to take criticism but it's something you will learn to love. Getting fresh eyes on your work will help you see your work differently. It's very hard to crit your own work when you have watched it a billion times :P Remember your audience. You can't have a character act out a joke that only you and your family will get. Make sure to cater to as many people as possible. Lastly, evoke some type of empathy with your audience. If your audience can relate to your character, they will feel a bond with him/her. The major problem besides story with feature films these days is character. The audience isn't connecting with the characters on screen. If you put your character in a scenario that we can't relate to in one way or another, we can't attach ourselves to them. Why should we care about something that we can't relate to in one way or another? If we can relate to something, it makes the situation more real. Animation is much deeper then moving around nicely. It's about telling good stories. If your shot is 1sec or even 50sec, make sure that it's entertaining or you will lose your audience. Hopefully this will help make you look at your work differently :) Happy Animating!

So this past weekend I put in a new kitchen floor. The old one was old and needed an update. Before this whole animation jazz, I did a lot of building and construction work. I used to think, construction worker gone animator was kinda odd but I know an ex cop gone animator! Just goes to show ya that people come from all different walks of life :) Here are the before and after pics. The top is obviously the old floor.

Samo thang, I'm back working for reel fx for a little while. I'm sick for the first time in ages. I'm subbing a character animation class at Parsons for a bud. Playing the nintendo wii when I get the chance. (Zelda is awesome, if you are a fan of Zelda, you will love this one!) Oh and the biggest one.... I'm working on a short... shhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone :) I've written the story, designed the character on paper and now I have to finish storyboarding it. Sooooooooooooooo awesome! Spent a long long time out side with my homey and his brother in law. It was dark, cold and I was exhausted but I got a wii and it was worth it. There was about 300 or more people and only 200 got a wii. I was lucky to be number 93. WHOOHOO!

New Shot

Animation is a never ending journey and I think that's why I'm drawn so heavily to it. You can study and grow for the rest of your life. I spend a lot of time animating shots at home so that I can get better. Whether I'm working on a job or have some extra free time, I always have a shot that I'm working on at home. The worst thing that can happen is not practicing. Set a goal for the shot and try to reach it. Even if it is unsucessful, make sure that you learn something from it. Do you want to demonstrate weight? Strong acting? Good timing? Spacing? etc. Of course it is ideal to have all of this in a shot but sometimes it's better to focus more on one aspect at a time. Maybe you're confident with your spacing and timing but want to really show great acting. Do a shot that demonstrates this and keep doing shots until you feel confident. I personally spend most of my time on performance. I want to solve my scenes in unique yet relatable ways. One of my mentors Kyle Clark always said, "find unique solutions to the scene." I will never forget that and I always strive to do this in my acting. I have a new shot in the works and will be posting my blocking very soon. I hope to finish it within the week so that I can update my reel yet again. Updating the reel is a never ending process! Until next time, I'm outtie.

Texture and contrast in Animation

I wanted to write this down for some time now and what better way to do it on a blog! :P Anyhoo, something that I think is really important in animation is texture and contrast in animation. Something that you will notice in student animations is that everything seems to flow in a very monotonous way. It usually feels like the timing and phrasing are on distinct even beats. Think of it as one of those heart monitor thingys that go beep, beep beep beep....etc. It's very boring to watch and even more boring in animation. What makes watching that monitor beep interesting is when we wait for it to go beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep and flatline. In animation we look for that change, that texture and contrast in everything about animation. You want to break up moves so that you have fast moves and slow moves weaved together. By doing this, you add a nice interesting texture to the scene. Ever watch a scary movie and the girl goes into the quiet house "hello??............." and you wait for something to jump out and get her? It's that dramatic contrast that make it fun to watch. I mean it's part of the suspense that makes you enjoy it but it's also the contrast between the silence then the unexpected "BOO!" You want to give these moments in your animation. You don't want everything to feel flat and boring. Contrast your timings, your arcs in your poses, your characters emotions if possible. Add texture to your phrasing. Make your animation feel like it flows nicely together like a piece of good music. Make sure everything is done for a reason. Texture and contrast and all of that good stuff about animation should be PLANNED out before you animate. Know your character and know why he is doing the things that he does. Take advantage of the medium and remember that our audience doesn't care that it's animation and is hard to do. All they care about is if they are entertained. Key note : Remember your audience! Don't forget who is going to watch your shot. A problem that young animators have is that they concentrate on the details first and forget about the overall performance. I must admit, I did this for a long time. Remember, just because you spent 2 days on the overlap of the pinky toe, the audience probably didn't even notice it. This isn't to say that you shouldn't put it in, It's just that you should add that special touch after the shot is working. It's like a painting, block out the overall picture then work your way down to the details. No one said that animation is easy :) Practice, practice practice! Happy animating!
